TALLAHASSEE, FL — The No. 4 seeded Virginia Cavaliers made the upset over No. 1 Maryland Terrapins 3-1 this afternoon at the Seminole Softball Complex to advance to the championship game against Florida State. UVA improves to 35-25 as Maryland falls to 48-21 on the season.
“We have put ourselves in the position we need to be in to have a chance to win this tournament by beating a good Maryland team,” Virginia Head Coach Cheryl Sprangel said. “We are 3-1 and can’t afford to lose another game so we have to come out, play our game and do our best to top Florida State. We were in this situation last season and now we have to go one step forward and focus on FSU.”
The two teams remained scoreless until Maryland scored the first run in the 6th inning on a passed ball. Virginia answered with three runs in the bottom of the inning off a sacrifice from Lori Reese and a single from Karen Breshears to give the Cavaliers the 3-1 win. Kristen Dennis picked up her eighth win on the season as Kelly Shipman went to 29-13.
“We’re obviously disappointed to not be playing the championship game,” Maryland Head Coach Gina LaMandre said. “We played a tough game with Virginia and I’m proud of the team for not giving up when we were down. It was a tough loss and we’ll just have to look at what we need to work on before heading to the regional this week.”
Virginia is 3-1 in the tournament and advances to the championship game at 3:30pm against No. 2 Florida State. This game will be tape delay on Sunshine at 7:00pm. If Florida State were to lost the first game, game nine would be played at 6:00pm, live delayed on Sunshine, and would become the championship game.
