GREENSBORO, N.C. – Florida State’s Stephen Cardullo was named ACC Player of the Week after leading the Seminoles to a perfect 5-0 week including a three-game sweep at Maryland for the Seminoles first conference sweep of the season. The weekly accolade is the first of Cardullo’s career and the second for Florida State in 2009.
Cardullo had a spectacular week in which he hit .500 (11-for-22) recording multiple hits in the final four games, while recording at least one run and an RBI in all five games against Florida Gulf Coast and Maryland. Cardullo finished the Maryland series batting .571 with eight hits in 14 at-bats. He recorded three home runs, drove in eight and scored seven times en route to slugging a team-high 1.214.
The junior shortstop ended the weekend on a high note going 3-for-5 at the plate with two home runs, while posting career-highs in RBI (6) and runs scored (4) in the series finale against the Terps. Sunday’s game marked the first multi-home run game of his career and in the process Cardullo slugged his first career grand slam in the top of the seventh. He gave the Seminoles an early lead in game three blasting a two-run shot in the top of the first.
In the resumption of game one on Saturday, Cardullo provided some breathing room for the Seminoles as he belted a solo shot in the top of the seventh to give FSU a four-run lead.
Against Florida Gulf Coast, the Coral Spring, Fla., native capped an eight-run fifth inning blasting a three-run shot off the scoreboard in left. He would then single in the eighth and break a 9-9 tie scoring the go ahead run and eventual game-winner on a sacrifice fly to center field.
Since making the move to shortstop on March 17, Cardullo has made just one error in 29 total chances. He is currently riding an errorless streak spanning eight consecutive games (perfect in 25 chances). Cardullo is also in the midst of a career-high 10-game hit streak.
Florida State (16-8) returns to the diamond on Tuesday, March 31 as the Seminoles travel east across I-10 to face the Florida Gators (18-8) at the Baseball Grounds in Jacksonville. First pitch is slated for 7:00 p.m.
