May 23, 2007

ATHENS, Ga. –
On Thursday, May 24 Florida State men’s tennis senior and co-captain Jonathas Sucupira (Sao Paulo, Brazil) and junior Sam Chang (Young-Ming, Taiwan) will begin round one of the 2007 NCAA Doubles Championships. The Florida State duo will take on Louisville’s Damar Johnson and Slavko Radman who are currently ranked 18 in the nation. Match time will not be before 2:00 p.m. ET.

The NCAA Division I Men’s Tennis Subcommittee selected the 64 singles players and 32 doubles teams to compete in the 2007 NCAA Division I Men’s Tennis Championships. Doubles competition will be conducted May 23-28 at Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Georgia, hosted by the University of Georgia.

Currently ranked No. 20 in the nation, Sucupira and Chang hold a 10-3 dual match record while 8-3 in the ACC. The doubles team has earned four ranked wins including defeats over #40 Lenny Gullan/David Stone (UNC), #19 Nicolas Delgado/Pedro Graber (VT), #13 William Noblitt/Nick Cavaday (NCSU) and #7 Joey Atas/David Goulet.

The selection of teams and individuals for the NCAA Division I Men’s Tennis Championships is based on the prescribed criteria listed in the championships handbook and approved by the Division I Championships/Competition Cabinet.

Automatic qualification into the Division I doubles championships is awarded to any conference with one or more doubles teams ranked in the ITA Top 60 for doubles. For conferences with more than one doubles team within the ITA Top 60, the subcommittee will apply the NCAA selection criteria to determine which doubles team is the automatic qualifier from those conferences.
