TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (seminoles.com) –
Following very successful 2011-12 campaigns by the Florida State men’s and women’s golf teams, the Seminole golfers have continued that success both nationally and internationally this summer. Chase Seiffert, who earned All-ACC honors in 2012, has played especially well in winning both the Florida State Amateur and Florida State Open championships. Jessica Negron, who earned All-ACC honors in 2011, will play in the upcoming U.S. Amateur in August – the second time she will play in the event during her career.
CASTELAIN WINS BIARRITZ CUP
Rising sophomore Laure Castelain claimed the individual championship at the Biarritz Cup sponsored by the French Golf Federation on July 16. She carded a four-round total of 286 to claim a two stroke victory over Paula Zabarte of Spain. In winning the event, Castelain carded scores of 69-73-73-71=286 in the 72-hole stroke play event. Castelain’s score of 69 in the first round was tied for the best single round score of the tournament. She was at or under par in two of her four rounds (69 in round one and 71 in round four) and was one of only two players in the event who carded scores of par or better in multiple rounds.
NEGRON TO PLAY IN U.S. AMATEUR
Rising senior Jessica Negron will play in the 2012 U.S. Amateur Championship at The Country Club in Cleveland, Ohio, August 6-12. She qualified to play in the event as she carded a 73 in a qualifier at Eagle’s Landing Country Club in Stockbridge, Ga., on July 9. It marks the second time during her career that she will play in the U.S. Amateur. Negron advanced to match play in 2010 after she carded a score of 149 (77-72) during two rounds of stroke play.
SEIFFERT SETS RECORDS IN WINNING FLORIDA OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP
Rising senior Chase Seiffert won the individual championship at 66th Florida Open in record fashion on July 22 at the Ritz Carlton Members Golf Club in Lakewood Ranch with a record low three-round total of 193. He set the tournament record with a career low nine under par score of 63 in the final round after setting single round records of 64 in the second round and 66 in the first round of the tournament. Seiffert broke the tournament record for a single round score formerly held by former Seminole Paul Azinger and 2010 U.S. Amateur Champion Peter Uihlein who both carded scores of 67 in winning pervious championships. Seiffert carded his score of 63 with 10 birdies and only one bogey on the course at the Ritz. Seiffert defeated Case Marinell by nine strokes to win the championship. Coupled with his win at the Florida State Amateur, Seiffert became only the second player in history to win the State Amateur and the State Open in the same year.
