The members of the nationally ranked men’s and women’s golf teams have been very busy this summer as they have carried the red-hot Florida State banner into many of the national events around the nation as they continue to improve their games and prepare for even more success on the collegiate level in 2010-11.
FORMER SEMINOLE MCNEIL TO PLAY IN BRITISH OPEN
George McNeil, who was an All-American at Florida State in 1998, begins play in the 2010 British Open on July 15. He is enjoying one of his best seasons as a professional this year and has earned nearly $600,000 in prize money entering the British Open. McNeil is set to tee of at 11:21 EDT on Thursday and is paired with Simon Edwards of Wales and Jae-Bum Park of South Korea. McNeil earned his career best PGA finish of tied for fifth at the Northern Trust Open in July and has earned four top 25 finishes so far this year. McNeil helped the Seminoles finish in seventh place in the 1995 NCAA Championship finals.
GRAHAM ADVANCES AT US PUBLINKS CHAMPIONSHIP
Rising junior Wesley Graham, who helped the Seminoles to a tied for third place finish at the 2010 NCAA Championship finals, has advanced to the second round of match play in the US Publinks Championship at the Champions Course at the Bryan Park Golf and Conference Center in Greensboro, N.C. He finished in a tied for 24th place in stroke play with an even par total of 144 (72-72) in the two rounds played to qualify for match play. Graham then defeated Andrew Lawson of Dallas, 4 and 3, to advance to the round of 32 where he will face John-Tyler Griffin of Wilson, N.C. on July. 15.
NEGRON AND THOMSON TO PLAY IN US AMATEUR
Two players from the nationally ranked women’s golf team – rising sophomores Jessica Negron and Hannah Thomson – will play in the US Women’s Amateur Championship at the Charlotte Country Club Aug, 9-15. It marks the first time both players will compete in the US Amateur.
