MACON, Ga. (seminoles.com) – Florida State freshman Kathleen Sumner is in a tie for fourth place, and sophomore Amanda Doherty is in a tie for 10th place in the individual standings after the first round of the Brickyard Collegiate at the Brickyard Golf Course. The Seminoles are competing in the 14-team event as five individuals with no team score being recorded.
Sumner (Charleston, S.C.) led the Seminoles with four birdies as she carded a 1-over par score of 73 in the first round. She came within two strokes of tying her career-best single round score and finished with a score of 73 or better for the sixth time during her first season at Florida State. Sumner played her final 11 holes at two strokes under par with nine of her final 11 holes of the round played at par or better. She improved her score from three over par after her first six holes to one over par at the end of her round.
“Today was a very up and down day for me,” said Sumner. “I was able to hang in there and put up a pretty good number. I need to hit more greens tomorrow and keep the good momentum going.”
Sumner is only one stroke out of the lead of even par 72 with the pace being set by three players. She trails Payton Schanen of Mercer, Madison Caldwell of Kennesaw State and Louise Yu of Vanderbilt by one stroke each. She begins play in the second of three rounds on Monday playing for her first career top five finish and looking to finish as the Seminoles’ leader for the second time in her career. Sumner finished in a career-best tie for sixth place in the individual standings at the Dickson Intercollegiate earlier this spring.
Doherty (Atlanta, Ga.) continued to play stellar golf as she fired a 2-over par score of 74. As one of 14 golfers in the top 10 of the individual standings, she is only two strokes behind the group of individual leaders. Doherty carded two birdies and 14 holes scored at par or better in earning her first round score. She was even par over her final 11 holes with two birdies and seven holes scored at par. Doherty closed the afternoon with five consecutive holes scored at par.
“I did not have my A game today, but I feel good about where my game is right now,” said Doherty. “I’m looking forward to the next two rounds.”
Doherty has been Florida State’s most consistent golfer this season and is averaging a career-low 72.09 strokes in nine events. She has shaved more than two full strokes off of her scoring average from her freshman season and has scored a 74 or better in 10 of 11 rounds this spring and 20 of 23 rounds as a sophomore.
Sophomore Ashley Mangan (Clermont, Fla.) is in a tie for 26th place in the individual standings with a first round score of 77.
Each of the five Seminoles will tee off from hole No. 10 for the second straight day beginning at 9:30 a.m.
