PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. (seminoles.com) – Florida State freshman Kathleen Sumner is in a tie for 12th place in the individual standings, and the No. 23 Seminole women’s golf team is in a tie for ninth place in the team standings after the first of three rounds at the Stanford Intercollegiate at the Poppy Hills Golf Course.  Sumner tied her career low for a single round score as she finished tied for the team lead with three birdies.  She begins play in Tuesday’s second round only three strokes out of the top five and six strokes out of the individual lead.

No. 8 Stanford, the host team, is in first place in the team standings with a 4-under par score of 280.  Stanford was the only team to shoot below par in the first round and holds an eight stroke lead over No. 4 UCLA.  Hannah Kim of Northeastern shot a 5-under par score of 66 and is in first place in the individual standings.  She holds a two-stroke lead or Mike Liu of Stanford and Wenyung Keh of Washington.

After one round of play, the No. 23 ranked Seminoles are ahead two strokes in front of No. 8 ranked Oklahoma State as they compete against six of the nation’s top 25 and 10 of the nation’s top 50 teams in one of the most power-packed events of the year in women’s collegiate gold.

“We got off to an okay start,” said Head Coach Amy Bond.  “I think the more we play this course the better we are going to get in the next two rounds.  We need to execute and cut down on the big numbers.”

Sumner (Charleston, S.C.) tied her career low with a 72 as she carded 14 holes at par or better with three birdies.  She played even par on her first nine holes with two birdies and five holes played at par.  Sumner moved under par with a birdie on her second hole after making the turns (the Seminoles began play on the 10th hole) and closed her round with five scores at par on her final seven holes.

Sumner’s score marked the second time this fall that she has finished with a score of 72.  She carded a score of 72 in the first round of the Ocean Course Invitational – the first round of her collegiate career. Sumner’s score of 72 also tied her best score in the first round of a tournament during her burgeoning Florida State career.

Sophomore Amanda Doherty (Atlanta, Ga.) continued her fine fall play as she scored a 3-over par 74.  It marked the ninth consecutive and ninth time in 10 rounds this fall that she has carded a 74 or better.  Doherty played solid golf in the first round with 14 holes scored at par or better with one birdie.  She closed her round on a high note with a birdie on the par five hole No. 9.

Doherty is in a tie for 24th place in the individual standings.  She has finished in the top 16 of each of the first three events of the season with her best placing of tied for 10th coming at the season-opening Ocean Course Invitational.  Doherty has each 10 top-25 finishes in the first 15 events of her Florida State career.

Seniors Kim Metraux (Lausanne Switzerland) and Kayla Jones (Milton, Ga.) are tied for 42nd in the individual standings after carding identical scores of 76.  The Seminoles are playing without senior All-American Morgane Metraux who is competing in the second state of Qualifying School for the LPGA Tour.

As a team, Florida State counted 11 birdies in the first round of the Stanford Intercollegiate to bring its season total to 133.  Bond will donate $10 for each birdie made by one of her players this fall to hurricane relief in the states of Florida and Texas (#birdiesfortxfl).

Florida State begins play in Tuesday’s second round at 10:30 ET off of hole No. 1.  The Seminoles will play with Northwestern and Pepperdine.
