SUN Sports Gridiron Greats Series Returns With Five All New Episodes

June 6, 2008

ORLANDOJim Kelly, Fred Marion, Howard Schnellenberger, Kerwin Bell, Neal Anderson, Ricky Nattiel, Terrell Buckley, Casey Weldon, Amp Lee and many more — their memories may be a bit more distant now, but they still can recollect, in vivid detail, the game day stories and pivotal plays that defined some of FSU, UF and UM’s most memorable games from years past and will share those memories with Sun Sports’ viewers throughout the summer during the network’s acclaimed GRIDIRON GREATS series.

Back for its fourth season, Sun Sports dug deep into the archives and found five new GRIDIRON GREATS games to add to the series, including Jim Kelly’s impressive first-start as quarterback when Miami beat Penn State on their home turf back in 1979.  Plus, Florida State‘s memorable and crushing defeat of Michigan while playing in Ann Arbor in 1991 and a look back the last time Florida beat Miami in 1985.  These are just a few of the memorable regular season and bowl games fans won’t want to miss.

This season, Sun Sports premieres the first new episode on Saturday, June 7 at 4pm, with the 1981 Penn State @ Miami game with former Hurricanes Fred Marion, Don Bailey and coach Howard Schnellenberger who joined host Steve Walsh to re-live this classic game.  It was Halloween night at the Orange Bowl and the `Canes, led by quarterback Jim Kelly and defensive back Marion, beat the number one-ranked Nittany Lions in a stunning 17-14 victory.

GRIDIRON GREATS runs May-August and this year includes 26 memorable games involving Florida State, the University of Florida and the University of Miami.  The signature series takes the concept of pairing classic football games with multiple teammates/coaches from those contests together in one venue to discuss not only the game itself, but their favorite playing memories, behind-the-scenes stories, and other gridiron related anecdotes that never made the headlines when they suited up.  Former UM QB Steve Walsh hosts the UM Gridiron Greats with former Gators James Bates and Chris Doering hosting the UF presentations and former Seminole Keith Jones hosting the FSU editions.
