Sydney Sherrill Sweeps National/Conference Awards

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — After an explosive week at the plate as part of an impressive freshman season, Sydney Sherrill earned every weekly award she was eligible for as she was named NFCA National Player of the Week, USA Softball National Player of the Week and ACC Player of the Week on Tuesday.

It is the second time this season that the Seminoles have had a National Player of the Week, as Kylee Hanson received accolades from the NFCA and USA Softball on February 20.

“I couldn’t be more proud of Syd,” said FSU head coach Lonni Alameda. “She’s been working really hard at getting smarter and developing her game. Obviously, these awards are a team effort, but Syd has been a lot of fun and raised the bar for us as a program. Really excited for her and this is a great honor.”

The Moore, Okla., native had offensive onslaught against No. 19 Louisiana and Pitt last week. She finished with a .579 batting average (11-for-19) with six doubles, two home runs, nine RBI, three runs scored and a slugging percentage of 1.211.

Sherrill had multiple hits in all five games this week, improving her batting average to a team-high .429. The six doubles on the week increased her season total to 22, which leads the NCAA and has already set an FSU single-season record in the category, surpassing the mark of 19 set by Alex Powers in 2017 and Yuruby Alicart in 2006.

Sherrill hit a walk-off, two-RBI double against Pitt on April 6 to give FSU a 2-1 victory and extend its ACC-winning streak to 36 games, which is the fifth-longest conference winning streak in NCAA history.

She now leads the ACC in five different categories – slugging (.810), RBI (41), hits (54), total bases (102) and doubles (22).

“It means a lot to me to win this award, but I couldn’t do it without my team,” Sherrill said. “This team is so special and we don’t let down easy. My teammates make it so easy to play for them because of how much fun they have and how they love the game.”
