TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Florida State forwards Sanna Talonen and Tiffany McCarty received National Team of the Week honors for their outstanding play last week from TopDrawerSoccer.com and Soccer Buzz, respectively. The Seminole duo each posted five points, on two goals and one assist, as FSU rolled to a pair of victories over nationally ranked Wake Forest and Duke.
Talonen, a native of Tampere, Finland, earned her second weekly honor from TopDrawerSoccer.com this year. She had a goal and an assist in the win over Wake Forest and her score in the win over Duke gave FSU a two-goal lead in the first half. The sophomore forward leads the Seminoles this season with 10 goals and 23 total points. She is now tied for fourth place in career goals on FSU’s all-time list (28) and ranks eighth in career points (65). Earlier this week, Talonen was also named ACC Co-Player of the Week.
McCarty tied a career-high with five points in the 5-2 victory over Duke. The Laurel, Md., native had a hand in the first two goals of the game as she guided Florida State to a 2-0 lead at the break. McCarty scored her first goal of the game in the ninth minute and followed that with an assist on Talonen’s goal in the 30th minute. She put the game out of reach in the 79th minute with her second goal of the afternoon and third multi-goal game of the season to lead all Seminole players. This marks the second time this season that McCarty has earned weekly honors from Soccer Buzz.
The performances by Talonen and McCarty helped FSU to back-to-back five-goal performances for the first time ever in ACC play. The Seminole tandem currently rank in the top 10 in the league in points per game and goals per game.
Florida State is back in action this week as the Seminoles host the Clemson Tigers on Thursday, October 23 at 7:00 p.m., in the final home regular season game of 2008.
