Tar Heels Take Noles

April 6, 2012

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The No.31 Florida State women’s tennis team fell to No.8 North Carolina today, 4-0 at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center in Chapel Hill, N.C., moving to 11-7 (4-4 ACC) on the season.

The Seminoles surrendered the doubles point as the Tar Heel won all three doubles matches. Junior Amy Sargeant and freshman Leyla Erkan dropped their match on court three 8-1 to Gina Suarez-Malaguti and Caroline Price. On court two, No. 7 Haley Hemm and Tessa Lyons defeated freshman Mia Vriens and junior Carolina De los Santos, 8-2. Junior Francesca Segarelli and Ruth Seaborne fell 8-4 on court one to No.4 Shinann Featherston and Lauren McHale.

“UNC came out very hot in doubles today, and we made a lot of errors across the board in doubles,” Head Coach Jennifer Hyde said. “We have to get back to playing doubles like we did during the five matches prior to this.”

Play was stopped after North Carolina had clinched the match, however the Seminoles forced third sets on three courts.

Segarelli was handed her first loss on court four of the spring as she fell to No.98 Price 6-1, 6-2. Seaborne would retire her match to No.33 McHale, 7-6, 4-1 ret.
Sargeant lost on court five to Lyons, 6-3, 6-3, giving the Tar Heels the 4-0 win.

“In singles, with one exception, every match was very close,” Hyde said. “Although we had a 4-0 loss, we split sets in three different positions and those matches were all stopped when UNC reached four points. The final score does not tell an accurate story of how very close this match was. We all see that fact and we hope we can get another shot at UNC at the ACC Championships in a few weeks. We will see how that pans out later, but for now we need to get ready for another big competition tomorrow against Duke.”

The Seminoles will be back in action in less than 24 hours as they will travel to Durham, N.C, to take on No.3 Duke at 11 a.m. on Saturday. Check back to Seminoles.com and Twitter (FSU_wtennis) for more information.
