TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Team Garnet beat Team Gold, 14-7, over two days of the 2016 Garnet & Gold Series to open the 2016-17 season Friday evening at Dick Howser Stadium. Garnet was leading, 7-5, after day one, and after Gold tied it in their first at-bat Friday, Garnet added another seven runs for the final two-day margin.
Sophomore Jackson Lueck finished with five hits over the two days – a pair of home runs and a double Thursday afternoon and two singles Friday night. The five relief pitchers Friday night combined to throw nine innings of two-hit baseball, striking out eight and walking one without allowing a run.
Down 7-5 entering Friday, Team Gold immediately tied the series when Kyle Cavanaugh’s two-run double scored Matt Henderson and Taylor Walls. After walking Donovan Petrey, Garnet starting pitcher Justin Sorokowski settled down, retiring the final five batters he faced.
For Team Garnet, Tyler Daughtry led off with a groundout to the catcher, but the next seven batters reached base and came around to score, making the game 14-7 through an inning. Nick Derr, Quincy Nieporte, Lueck, Rhett Aplin and J.C. Flowers each had a single, Jared Herron reached on a fielder’s choice to third base, and Sorokowski got one of the two runs he allowed back on an RBI single.
In Daughtry’s second at-bat of the inning, he drove in Herron and Sorokowski in what ended up being the final runs scored in the game.
The final game of the fall season will take place Monday at 3 p.m. against the Ontario Blue Jays. Admission for Monday’s game is free.
