TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Florida State women’s tennis team (1-1) fell 4-0 to the No. 7 Ohio State Buckeyes (3-0) at the 2017 ITA Kickoff Weekend at the Varsity Tennis Center on Saturday. The Seminoles will now face either Alabama (3-1) or Harvard (0-2) on Sunday. “We’ve got to give a lot of credit to Ohio State- they are a very disciplined and seasoned team,” Florida State head coach Jennifer Hyde said.
“Regardless of the outcome, we have a lot to take from today’s match. We are seeing during each competition what we are capable of doing and we need to continue to put things together consistently and sustain those levels.”
With five freshman on the roster, Florida State showed well against one of the most experienced teams in the nation. With seniors on courts three through six and four ITA-ranked singles players, Ohio State is one of the top teams in the country.
The Seminoles started strong in doubles before conceding the doubles point, and fell behind a set on each singles court. Sophomore Julia Mikulski led the second set 4-1 on court two, while junior Gabriella Castaneda fought hard against No. 1-ranked singles player Francesca Di Lorenzo. Castaneda and freshman Nandini Das were both competing for the second set but ran out of time as the match was clinched.
The match was featured as the PlaySight-ITA Women’s Match of the Week and was broadcast via livestream for fans on all six courts.
“Tomorrow is a huge match for us, regardless of who we play,” Hyde said. “We have to respond after taking one on the chin today. I’m excited to see what we are made of tomorrow and how we bounce back from today’s loss.”
The Noles will now face the loser of Alabama/Harvard at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday in the consolation round of the ITA Kickoff.
The ITA Kickoff Weekend is a nationwide event held across 15 host sites for both men and women’s tennis. The teams hope to qualify for the 2017 ITA Division I National Women’s Team Indoor Championship in New Haven, Conn. February 10-13.
