TALLAHASSEE, Fla.- The Florida State men’s tennis team (5-1) heads to McLeod Tennis Center in Lubbock, Texas to take part in the ITA Kickoff Weekend against No. 20 Mississippi State (1-0) at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday. Depending on results, the Seminoles will then play either Iowa (2-0) or host Texas Tech (2-1) at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday.
“We feel like this is a good opportunity for us to play outside and have the best opportunity to make final site,” Florida State head coach Dwayne Hultquist said. “I think Mississippi State is a really good team- they made final sixteen last year. We were fortunate enough to beat them early in the season last year, but they’re a very deep team.”
The Seminoles are 10-18 all-time against the Bulldogs, the last meeting being a 4-1 Florida State victory last season. FSU is 1-1 all-time against Texas Tech and would meet Iowa for the first time if they were to play.
The ITA Kickoff Weekend is a nationwide event held across 15 host sites for both men and women’s tennis. The teams hope to qualify for the 2017 ITA Division I National Men’s Team Indoor Championship in Charlottesville, Va. February 17-20.
“We’re definitely preparing, we’re going a little bit early to get used to the altitude and the weather there,” Hultquist said. “I’m looking for our team to really come together and play hard and for each other and just battle. We’ve got four new guys on this team, now we’re hitting that stretch where we’re going to have tough matches.”
Last weekend, the Seminoles shutout Florida Gulf Coast, Florida A&M, and Georgia Southern to improve to 5-1 on the year.
