“To come up here to New York and leave with a solid win over a very good Columbia team is exactly what our team needed. It was a complete team effort, and every one of our players had a hand in the work that was done to grab an early-season road win.”
After Florida State won the last two courts to claim the doubles point, the Seminoles took a 2-0 lead when freshman Nandini Das defeated Ali Pollack 6-0, 6-4 on court four. The Lions cut the deficit to 2-1, but the Seminoles sealed the win when junior Gabriella Castaneda defeated Star Makarome 6-3, 6-1 on court one and sophomore Julia Mikulski completed a hard-fought comeback 7-6, 6-4 win over Columbia’s Rima Asatrian on court two.
With the 4-1 victory in hand, the final two matches were played out as Florida State went up 5-1 when freshman Andrea Garcia defeated Adi Milstein 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 on court six. Andrea Kevakian came from behind to defeat senior Daniela Schippers in three sets, concluding the match at 5-2 in favor of the Seminoles.
“The preparation for this first competition was as good as it could be coming in, and that will continue to be our focus heading into the ITA-Kick Off Weekend at Ohio State,” Hyde said. “Today’s win gives us great momentum heading into our first of many top 10 ranked opponents.”
The Seminoles are now 2-0 all-time against the Lions, the other meeting being a Florida State win back in 1989.
On Saturday before the match, the Seminoles held a meet-and-greet and watch party for the men’s basketball game vs. North Carolina for the Seminole Boosters in New York City.
Next up, the Noles will travel to Columbus, Ohio for the ITA Kick-Off Weekend on January 28 and 29 before returning to Tallahassee for the home opener on February 3, a doubleheader against North Florida and Florida Gulf Coast.
