Hilton Head, S.C. – Three Seminoles participated in the first round of qualifying play at the Shipyard Cup in Hilton Head, S.C. on Sunday, winning all three matches to go 3-0 on the day.
Sophomore Julia Mikulski defeated Senaida Kambel 6-1, 6-3, while junior Gabby Castaneda quickly downed Kayla Wilkins 6-3, 6-1. Freshman Andrea Garcia defeated Kariann Pierre-Louis in three sets 5-7, 6-3, 6-3.
The Florida State trio will continue singles play with round 2 matches on Monday.
Schippers wins doubles flight at Bedford Cup
Over the weekend, the other members of the team were in Tampa, Fla. for the Bedford Cup.
Freshman Nandini Das took the first match of her singles flight defeating Emilia Granstrom of UCF 7-6, 6-0. She then fell to FIU’s Andrea Lazaro 6-4, 6-2. With the win, Das took part in extra matches, falling to Jessica Cortes of USF 4-6, 6-2, 10-3.
Senior Daniela Schippers fell to USF’s Olga Martinez 7-5, 7-6 while sophomore Ariana Rahmanparast fought hard but fell to Cortes 6-3, 4-6, 6-2.
In consolation, Schippers defeated FIU’s Gabriella Ferreira 6-1, 7-5 and Florida Atlantic’s Marisa Ruiz 6-3, 6-2 to win the bracket.
In doubles play, Schippers teamed with North Florida’s Lucia Montano and won two matches to claim the victory in Flight 4. Schippers and Montano defeated USF’s team of Hailey Grillo and Brooke Lashway 8-4 and Stetson’s pair of Brittany Hill and Alexe Viaud 8-1 to take home the win.
Das and Rahmanparst took on Florida Atlantic’s Alisa Rudenko and Heather Walton but fell 8-6. In consolation, the pair bested teams from UNF and UCF to claim the consolation bracket in flight 1.
