TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Florida State fans have been clamoring for a return to the greatness that defined the football program during the 1990s.
Combine the excitement generated by the Seminoles’ 10-win season last year and ticket-sales numbers entering the 2011 campaign and it’s clear that those times may very well be back in Tallahassee.
The FSU Athletics Department announced Wednesday that Three-Game, Family Zone and Young Alumni ticket packages are officially sold out. In the two years that these types of ticket-buying options have been in place, none of the three has ever been completely exhausted. In turn, it means that season and single-game tickets are going to be increasingly harder to come by.
“The excitement for this football season is off the charts,” FSU Assistant Athletics Director for Marketing Jason Dennard said. “We put the plans in place for this type of high ticket-demand a few years ago and we have been anticipating this for quite some time. The systems that we put in place really put us ahead of the game and got us to where we are today.”
Florida State is in that position because officials weren’t caught off-guard by the renewed interest in Seminole football.
After an unprecedented run of 14 consecutive top-five national finishes and two national championships, the program leveled off in the 2000s. But the Seminoles closed out the decade with an impressive wins over Florida in the home finale and South Carolina in the Chick-fil-A Bowl last December.
Under head coach Jimbo Fisher’s guidance, the Seminoles then went out and signed what many listed as the nation’s No. 1-ranked recruiting class in February.
“We put tickets on sale a lot earlier than we ever have in the past,” Dennard said. “We actually began selling tickets for the 2011 season last November. By moving the sales cycle up so early, we were able to give fans many different options when purchasing their tickets. The excitement continued to grow so much last season that we actually started the sales cycle even before the games against Florida and South Carolina and then it just continued to grow from there up to where we are now.”
In addition to FSU’s improved play and product on the field over the course of the last year, a certain early-season FSU opponent is helping drive the ticket-sales bus and a big announcement on that game could come soon.
“The demand for the game against Oklahoma on Sept. 17 is just unprecedented,” Dennard said. “We expect to be able to announce the game against the Sooners as a sell out within the next week. Once we do that, we will then announce a six-game season-ticket and it will include the remaining home games.”
A three-game package that includes the Miami contest and a fan’s choice of two from Louisiana-Monroe, Charleston Southern, Maryland, NC State or Virginia is still on sale. Single-game tickets for all but the Oklahoma game, including the season-opener against Louisiana-Monroe on Sept. 3, remain on sale as well.
Fans are encouraged to order tickets through the Seminoles.com Ticket Page or by calling 1-888-FSU-NOLE. But hurry because they aren’t lasting long.
“We have had a renewal rate for season tickets of over 91 percent this year and that is the highest it has been in at least the last eight years,” FSU Assistant Athletic Director for Ticket Operations Ben Zierden said.
