The Noles split last week's games, defeating Wake Forest at home then falling on the road to a red hot North Carolina team. The team returns home this week for the final two regular season games. On Thursday night, Virginia comes to town for a 7pm tip, then on Saturday- NC State visit the Tuck on Senior Day. Michael Snaer, Joey Moreau and Ralfi Portuondo will be honored in their final home game as Seminole. It's ACC Tournament time as the 23rd ranked Seminoles are seeded No. 4 entering the Tournament March 7-10 in Greensboro, NC. The Garnet and Gold earned a first-round bye and will open play this Friday, March 8th at 11:00am against the winner of Game 1 (#5 Miami vs. #12 Virginia Tech). The title game will be shown nationally on ESPN2, while the first round, quarterfinal and semifinals games will be televised on RSN (includes FOX Sports Carolinas, FOX Sports South, FOX Sports Florida, Sun Sports, Comcast SportsNet Mid-Atlantic, and NESN). Those games will also be available via ESPN3 and WatchESPN. No. 6 Florida State (10-0) held off a ninth inning rally by Villanova (1-6) to hang on to a 2-1 victory on Sunday afternoon to complete the series sweep on Mike Martin Field inside Dick Howser Stadium. Florida State weathered the cold conditions on Friday finishing with 22 hits, the most since clubbing 38 against Ohio State in the Tallahassee Regional finals on May 31, 2009. It also marked the most runs scored in a game since plating 23 in a win over Texas A&M in the 2011 Tallahassee Super Regional. The Noles took Game 2 Saturday, as they got 6.0 shutout innings from Scott Sitz en route to a 7-0 victory over Villanova (1-5) on a cool, crisp afternoon in front of a crowd of 4,790. Sitz (2-0), along with Bryant Holtmann and Gage Smith, combined for the four-hit shutout, FSU's second of the season. The trio combined to strikeout 14 Wildcat hitters while walking two. The Noles return to Dick Howser on Tuesday & Wednesday with midweek tilts against Presbyterian College. ACC play begins this weekend when Boston College comes to Tallahassee with first pitch scheduled for 6pm Friday.
The Softball team finished off the Renegade Classic in grand style defeating Troy by a mercy rule 8-0 in 5 innings. Lacey Waldrop was sensational on the mound throwing her 2nd career No-Hitter. Celeste Gomez drilled a deep Home Run to pace the Garnet and Gold offensively. The team hosts Presbyterian College tomorrow night before hitting the road this weekend to open ACC play at NC State. On Friday, ,the Florida State men's tennis team defeated Texas for the first time in school history! Not only was it a win, but the No. 44 Seminoles upset the No. 15 Longhorns 5-2. The winning continued for the Noles on Sunday as they rolled away with a 6-1 win over No. 75 USF (4-5) at the Scott Speicher Tennis Center. After winning all three doubles matches, the Seminoles went on to win five of the singles matches for the win on the cold Sunday afternoon. The Seminoles travel to No. 5 Oklahoma on March 12 and Georgia Tech on March 15.
The 16th-ranked Seminole women's tennis team dropped a closely contested ACC match to 23rd-ranked Clemson Friday at the Scott Speicher Tennis Center. The Seminoles will host their arch-rival Florida March 6th at 4pm at Scott Speicher. Free Pizza will be given out to fans and there will be a t-shirt toss!
Swimming & Diving
The No. 15 Florida State men's swimming and diving team finished in fourth place at the 2013 ACC Championships at the Greensboro Aquatic Center. For the second consecutive season a Seminole was named the championship's most valuable swimmer. In 2012 the honor went to Mateo DeAngulo and this year it was Pavel Sankovich who finished the meet with six medals, four of which were gold.
Florida State's Sand Volleyball team kicked off its second season with a Garnet & Gold intersquad match at the Seminole Sand Volleyball Courts on Sunday where the Garnet team came away victorious! The team heads to the west coast next week for a Tri-Match against USC and LMU to begin full competition on Sunday, March 10 in Los Angeles, Calif.
