Thomas’ Big Night Lifts Gold To A 5-4 Win As Baseball Finishes Fall Practice

Tallahassee, FL – Friday night’s Garnet & Gold game turned into the Brady Thomas show. The freshman catcher from Anderson, SC went 3-for-3 with two doubles, two runs scored and a towering home run in the bottom of the seventh to lead the Gold to a 5-4 win the eight-inning game. Thomas was the only Seminole with a multi-hit game as all three knocks went for extra bases.

“It was just a privilege for me to play in the Garnet & Gold game at Florida State,” said Thomas. “To be out there with the best athletes in the country and compete was great. It felt really good to have success tonight. It was just fun to go out there and play.”

Thomas’ play highlighted a game that saw the Garnet squad come back from a 4-1 deficit to even the score in the top of the seventh. But as quickly as they tied the game up, Thomas broke the deadlock with a shot over the fence in right field. The hit was the only one surrendered by Neil Malpass who came out of center field to pitch in the seventh.

“I got a fastball down the middle that was up,” said Thomas. “I was able to pull it and got it over the fence in right field.”

The final game of fall practice featured 11 hits, two home runs, three doubles and two fielding errors in the fifth that allowed the Gold team to build its lead to 4-1. Nine different pitchers threw for both sides with seven allowing an earned run or less.

“We got to see a lot of young guys and we tried to just get their feet wet tonight,” said FSU Head Coach Mike Martin. “We wanted to force the catchers to throw to second base, see how the pitchers would react to an environment like this and overall I was very pleased with how our guys played.

“One inning we gave them six outs and that is not something we are going to survive with. It was a good fall and we accomplished a lot with our guys.”

True freshmen Caleb Graham and Travis Burge started the game and combined to go four innings and allow just one hit. They each had a strike out and only issued one walk between them.

“I was happy with both of them tonight,” said Martin of Graham and Burge. “I though they hit their spots whereas some other guys missed their spots and they paid for it. That is what you learn from a game like this.”

Of the nine pitchers who took the hill, only D.J. Echols was on the Seminole roster last year. Eight of the nine hurlers issued just one walk or less and four recorded at least two strikeouts. Buster Posey picked up the win courtesy of Thomas’ home run and Brett Morris pitched a perfect eighth to get the save.

“I was encouraged that our young pitchers came out and competed,” said FSU Associate Head Coach Jamey Shouppe. “That is what you look for. We got some guys with some good stuff. We had two or three guys hit 90 or 91 MPH. The velocity is good. It is just a matter of making sure they know how to pitch and that they are able to do it with people in the stands. That is the whole purpose of the Garnet & Gold game. It worked out good for those guys. They got valuable experience.”

The only hit in the game through the first two innings was an infield single by Josh Spivey but Mark Gildea changed that in the top of the second. The redshirt freshman led off the inning with a shot over the fence in right staking the Garnet to a 1-0 lead.

The Gold took the lead back in the bottom of the fourth with a two-out rally. Buster Posey recorded a one-out single and then Malpass knocked a two-out double off the screen in right field. Travis Anderson, who was the only player with a multi-RBI game, drove both runs in with a hard hit single to center making it a 2-1 game.

The Gold added to their lead in the fifth as they loaded the bases. The rally began with a one out double by Thomas. Brandon Reichert followed with a base knock to put runners on the corners. A walk to Tony Thomas, Jr. then loaded the bases. A fielder’s choice brought one run home and an error at first allowed another to come in extending the Gold team’s lead to 4-1.

The Garnet team opened the top of the seventh with back-to-back singles by Ryne Malone and Ryan McArdle. A walk to Ruairi O’Connor loaded the base with still no one out in the inning. Josh Spivey cut the lead to 4-2 with a sac fly to center. The runners moved up to second and third on a wild pitch before Danny Diaz drove the second run of the inning home on a ground out. The Garnet team then evened the game on a wild pitch.

The lead didn’t last long though. In the bottom of the inning Thomas was back to work as he continued his big night. The freshman catcher picked up his third extra base hit of the night as he broke the tie with a solo shot over the right field fence.
