Florida State University senior Al Thornton, one of the favorites to earn Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Year honors, has been named to the Division I All-District 6 men’s basketball team by the National Association of Basketball Coaches. It marks the second consecutive season Thornton has earned All-District Six First-Team honors. The 15 different district teams are selected by the member coaches of the NABC with all of the selected players now eligible to earn NABC All-America honors.
Thornton has proven himself to be the top player in the nation’s top conference throughout the season. He has not taken a night off since the beginning of the season and enters Saturday’s regular season finale as the ONLY player ranked in the ACC’s top seven in overall scoring (second, career-high 19.2 ppg), rebounding (seventh, career-high 7.2 rebounds per game), free throw shooting percentage (sixth, .810), field goal shooting percentage (seventh, .520) and offensive rebounds per game (third, 3.1 orpg). Thornton has raised the level of his game even higher in ACC player. He is the leading scorer and rebounder in conference games only with career-best averages of 22.1 points and 8.2 rebounds in 15 conference games.
Thornton is averaging an ACC leading 22.1 points and 8.8 rebounds in conference games entering the final weekend of the regular season. He is one of only two players in the nation who lead a BCS conference in both scoring and rebounding in league games this season. Only Thornton and Kevin Durant of Texas are ranked first in their respective leagues in both scoring and rebounding in conference games. With Thornton leading the ACC and Durant leading the Big 12, the Seminoles’ senior star has put himself in elite air in Division I college basketball.
Thornton and the Seminoles close out their regular season as the travel to play at Miami on Saturday. Following their game against the Hurricanes, the Seminoles begin play in the 54th annual ACC Tournament on March 8 at the St. Pete Times Forum in Tampa, Fla.
