TAMPA, Fla. – With thunderstorms in Tampa, play at the State of Florida Championships was hindered as not all matches were able to be played today. The Florida State men’s tennis team continued to play strong by winning three of their four second round matches in Draw A. The Seminoles are competing on the campus of USF which has Florida State joining the Bulls as well as UCF, Florida Atlantic, Florida Gulf Coast, Miami and North Florida in the tournament.
In the A Draw of singles, junior Jordan Kelly-Houston (Christchurch, New Zealand) won his match 6-4, 7-5 over North Florida’s Daniel Sotomarino and will face USF’s Yannick Yoshizawa when play resumes tomorrow. Sophomore Blake Davis (Austin, Texas) did not drop a game as he won 6-0, 6-0 over FGCU’s Dean Tsamas and will take on Mitch Thams of UCF in the quarterfinals.
Freshman Cristian Gonzalez Mendez (Santiago de Compostela, Spain) faced Florida Atlantic’s Taylor Albrecht and won 7-5, 7-5. He will find out his opponent tomorrow. With those three wins, FSU advances the most players to the quarterfinals. Due to the rain, the B Draw was unable to play today.
In doubles play, junior Andres Bucaro (Guatemala City, Guatemala) and Gonzalez Mendez teamed up to defeat Miami’s Diego Soto and Gabriel Flores 8-5. In the consolation round, redshirt sophomore Brian Alden (Barrington, Ill.) and senior Jason Zafiros (Bradenton, Fla.) won 8-5 against FAU’s Chris Janssen and Sean Bacha.
Play will resume tomorrow morning at 8 a.m. Check back to Seminoles.com for results.
