Three Seminoles Garner First Place Finishes At Florida Relays

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The Florida State track and field teams
completed their third day of competition at the Florida Relays Friday. The
Seminoles ended the day with twenty seven top 10 finishes and three
first-place finishes.

Samantha George started the outdoor season impressively and she
exhibited no signs of letting up Friday. The senior won the invitational
women’s 400m dash with a time of 53.73. That was just .03 seconds off of a
NCAA Provisional Qualifying time. Lady Seminole Laura Gerber also took home
a first place finish in the women’s invitational 800m run. Gerber’s time of
2:08.78 was just shy of an NCAA Provisional Qualifying mark.

Florida State’s Darius Jones, a senior from Tallahassee, finished
first in the men’s pole vault with a mark of 16’03.25. That mark was an
outdoor season best for Jones and the Seminoles. In the invitational men’s
triple jump, FSU’s Mario Lowe finished in third place with a jump measuring

The Lady Seminoles ended the day with eight other top five
finishes. Nakeya Crutchfield posted a mark of 11.74 and a 4th place finish
in the 100m dash. NCAA Champion Tonya Carter finished 5th with a time of
11.82 in the invitational women’s 100m dash. Chinette Johnson placed fourth
in the 400m int. hurdles and just missed an NCAA Provisional Qualifying
mark with a time of 1:00.67.

Lady Seminole Makiba Batten finished with two top 10 finishes
Friday. Batten placed 4th in the invitational women’s discus throw and
ninth in the women’s invitational shot put. The Lady Seminoles also placed
fourth in the 4x400m relay with a time of 3:39.35. That was .35 seconds shy
of an NCAA Provisional Qualifying time. The 4×100 relay team also placed
fourth and just missed a Provisional Qualifying time with a mark of 45.49.

The Florida State men also had a strong showing in Gainesville
Friday. Tommy Kunish placed fifth in the 1,500m run with a time of 3:59.89.
Steve Augustine finished seventh in the 400m int. hurdles and just missed
an NCAA Provisional Qualifying time by one second. The Seminole’s 4x400m
relay finished third with a time 3:15.56.

The Florida Relays will come to a close Saturday and the Seminoles
will set their sigths on next weeks home meet featuring Kansas, Air Force,
and South Florida.
