Tallahassee, Fla. – Florida State seniors Daneika Borthwick and Yukako Noi, as well as sophomore Gabriella Castaneda, are listed in this week’s ITA rankings. Borthwick is the 38th-ranked singles player, while Castaneda and Noi form the 47th-ranked doubles tandem. Borthwick, from Cumbria, England, leads the Noles with a 22-11 singles mark and 25-12 doubles record on the year.
She has beaten 10 ranked opponents, including six from the ACC, and was named First Team All-ACC by the league’s coaches last week. She rose from unranked on March 1 to a season- and career-high of 31 on April 12.
Castaneda and Noi are ranked in doubles after playing just six matches together, all coming since April 10. In that time, the pair have gone 5-1 and beaten two ranked opponents, No. 45 Kimmy Guerin and Anna Ulyashchenko from Wake Forest and No. 16 Danielle Collins and Meghan Kelley of Virginia at the ACC Tournament. Both players have previously been ranked in doubles with different partners – Castaneda last season with former Seminole Emily Fanning, while Noi opened 2016 ranked No. 41 with Borthwick.
In the team rankings, the Seminoles rose three spots to No. 57 after a 4-1 win over No. 66 Boston College in the first round of the ACC Tournament last Wednesday. FSU will learn of its postseason fate, as well as at-large entries into the individual singles and doubles tournaments, on May 3.
