TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Junior Joep Tigchelaar was named the Mondo NCAA Male Athlete of the Week for his performance at the Stanford Invitational March 28. The award is presented by the Division I coaches group of the United States Track Coaches Association.
Tigchelaar won the men’s 10,000m out at the Stanford Invitational in Palo Alto, Calif. in a time of 28:33.81, breaking a Florida State school record that held strong for 32 years. His time was a personal best and good for an automatic bid to the NCAA Championships, June 11-14. Tigchelaar currently holds the top spots nationally and in the ACC in the 10,000m run.
This is the second award for Tigchelaar in the past week. He was named ACC Performer of the Week alongside teammate Vicky Gill, who was the top collegiate performer in the women’s 10,000m, breaking a school record in that event. Tigchelaar’s national honor is the first for the Seminole track and field team in 2003.
