#1 FLORIDA STATE (14-1)
Florida State remained No. 1 in this week’s Collegiate Baseball and Sports Weekly/ESPN Coaches polls and held at No. 3 in Baseball America after sweeping Charleston Southern last weekend. The Seminoles conclude a 14-game homestand with three mid-week games vs. Siena and Friday and Saturday games against Florida. FSU hits the road for a game against the Gators in Gainesville on Sunday. FSU’s 14-1 start is the best since the 1986 club began the year with the same record. Freshman left-hander Hunter Jones will get his first career start on Tuesday and right-hander Mark Sauls is scheduled to start on Wednesday. Thursday’s starter has not yet been decided. Matt Lynch (4-0) and Trent Peterson (3-0) will start against Florida on Friday and Saturday in Tallahassee. Junior Eddie Cannon, who struck out nine in six innings of relief Sunday vs. Charleston Southern, will make his first start as a Seminole at Florida.
Siena is winless on the 2003 season, narrowly missing its first victory Sunday at Florida (a 5-4 loss). The Saints wrap up the series with the Gators Monday night. Siena lost a three-game series at Florida International to open the year and then lost three at Florida Atlantic before losing the first two games at Florida.
Florida State leads the all-time series 3-0, which dates back to 2000. Last year in Tallahassee, the Seminoles defeated Siena 10-2 and 5-4 (10 innings). FSU downed Siena 9-2 in the only other meeting, which came in 2000.
