Top-Ranked Seminoles Practice Tuesday Under The Sun

Sept. 28, 1999

TALLAHASSEE, Fla.— No. 1 Florida State Seminoles (4-0) continued
preparation for Duke (0-3) with a 22-period full pad practice this
afternoon. The team started the day with the kicking game, worked
against Duke scout teams and finished the day with conditioning.

“It was very hot and sunny today,” said head coach Bobby Bowden.
“This was the hottest its been in about a month. They handled it pretty
well, but you could tell the difference. It is all repetition at this
point.”

All-ACC offensive tackle Ross Brannon, who has missed the last
two games, will have his right knee scoped on Thursday. The junior’s
status will be determined after the surgery. Donald Heaven has started
the last two games at split tackle in Brannon’s absence, but suffered a
sprained ankle against UNC and is not expected to play Saturday.
Redshirt freshman Brett Williams will make his first start.

“Brett Williams is getting exactly what he needs and that’s
experience,” said Bowden. “He is a very good prospect.”

Senior wide receiver Laveranues Coles will get a chance to play
in front of friends and family Saturday with FSU playing in his hometown
of Jacksonville.

“Laveranues got off to bad starts the last two years,” said
Bowden. “He has been persistent and worked hard through all of it. I
hope he can have a good game and he probably will. He still has time to
have a super year.”

Injury Report: DT Tony Benford and DT Chris Woods suffered heat
cramps while OG Jerry Carmichael sat out with an intestinal flu.

Saturday’s game against the Blue Devils will take place at
Alltel Stadium in Jacksonville. Kickoff time is set for 12:00 p.m. and
the game will be carried by Jefferson Pilot Sports.
