Track Ends FSU Relays with Six Qualifiers

Tallahassee, Fla. – The Florida State track and field team concluded the FSU Relays on Saturday, March 19, 2005 with six Tribe members and two relays posting regional qualifying marks in their respective events.

The men’s and women’s 4x100m relay teams regionally qualified in times of 40.50 and 45.45, respectively. All-Americans junior Derrick Baker (Miami, Fla./Northwestern), senior Rhoan Sterling (Cambridge, Ontario/Toledo), junior Ricky Argro (Orlando, Fla./Lyman) and sophomore Cedric Nabe (Geneva, Switzerland/Lycee-St. Joseph) lead the team to a third place finish. On the women’s side, juniors Marla Jackson (Jacksonville, Fla./Stanton College Prep), LaKendra McColumn (Lithonia, Ga./Southwest Dekalb), Evelyne-Cynthia Niako (Stone Mountain, Ga./Stephenson) and senior Kimberly Walker (Port of Spain, Trinidad & Tobago) ran the regional qualifying time for FSU.

Redshirt sophomore Garrett Johnson (Tampa, Fla./Tampa Baptist Academy) became the third thrower to earn a spot at the NCAA East Regional meet, throwing the discus 173’7″ (52.90m) for second place. Junior Andrew Diakos (Naples, Fla./Barron-Collier) recorded his third regional qualifying mark, taking third with a throw of 185’10” (56.65m).

Freshman Elliot Wood (Sydney, Australia/Narrabean Sports) and senior Greg Johnson (Miami, Fla./FIU) finished 1-2 in the 400m hurdles, recording regional qualifying marks of 51.82 and 52.37, respectively.

Senior Ian Hornabrook (Queensland, Australia/Rend Lake College) was edged by .03 seconds in the 1500m but still posted a regional qualifying mark of 3:46.35.

Junior Barbara Parker (Norfolk, England/Loughborough) joined the group headed the NCAA East Regional Championships, running 4:23.86 in the 1500m event finishing in first place.

Sophomore Lindsey Nelson (Jacksonville, Fla./Mandarin) took second in the discus, missing a regional qualifying mark in her second event, recording a mark of 154’8″ (47.15m). McColumn (Lithonia, Ga./Southwest Dekalb) and junior Deanna Lane were 3-4 in the 100m hurdles, running 14.02 and 14.05.

Junior Duane Griffiths (Margate, Fla./Taravello) was second in the 800m, running 1:52.78. Classmate Shawn Allen (Crystal River, Fla./Seven Rivers Christian) took second place in a jump-off in the high jump, posting a height of 6’8.75″ (2.05m).

The FSU women’s `A’ team ran a 4:00.07 to take second place in the 1600m sprint medley relay. Walker led off, Niako was second, followed by Adams and anchored by senior Sydney Mondragon (Pueblo, Colo./South).

The FSU women’s `A’ team finished third in 3:46.38 while the men’s team took third in 3:11.96.

The FSU men’s `B’ team ran a 3:22.47 to finish second in the 1600m sprint relay. The group was comprised of Baker, Nabe, sophomore Kennieth Allen (Colorado Springs, Colo./Rampart) and Tommy Noyes (North Canton, Ohio/Hoover).

FSU travels to the Florida Relays from March 23-26, 2005 in Gainesville, Fla. A group of distance runners will head to the Stanford Invitational from March 25-26, 2005.
