Tracking The Seminoles: The Jumpers

Feb. 19, 2009

Aaron Steele, a native of Newburgh, New York, is gearing up for his second competitive season as a Florida State triple jumper. Within a few weeks of the new season, Steele reset his personal record with a jump of 15.00 meters at last week’s New Balance Collegiate Invitational in New York. When Steele is not working hard on the track, he spends his time studying graphic design in hopes of one day creating video games for kids. Steele is anxiously awaiting the indoor ACC Championship in two weeks where he will face his toughest competition yet.

1. Do you have any superstitions or rituals before you compete?

I always pray before I jump. I ask God to keep me healthy and help me perform to the best of my ability.

2. If you could compete in any other event, what would it be? Why?

The 400m run! I watched a movie about a 400-meter runner called “Beautiful” and it really made me appreciate the event. Now when I watch it I find the 400 very beautiful when ran well.

3. If you were a tree (or animal) what kind of tree (animal) would you be?

A wolf or a golden eagle; they are very fierce and loyal.

4. If you could be a superhero, what would you want your superpowers to be?

I’ve always wanted to fly. And I’d like to have the power to heal.

5. What would I find in your refrigerator right now?

Muscle milk and…muscle milk…I need to go shopping.

6. What did you want to be when you were a child?

After I played my first video game as a kid I knew I wanted to design them.

7. If Hollywood made a movie about your life, who would you like to see play the lead role as you?

Definitely Will Smith. Is it weird that I know that?

8. If you had only six months left to live, what would you do with the time?

Make a bucket list. I’d go sky diving, see the earth from space, go to Italy and travel the world. I’d bring all my friends and family with me…that means my team.

9. Explain the worst haircut you have ever had?

The guy first cuts a shallow bald spot in the front of my head. Then, he used the clippers the wrong way and left the back of my head bald too.

Heather Leblanc, a senior from Live Oak, Fla., competed as a hepta-athlete for three seasons; however, due to several injuries currently competes as a long jumper. Leblanc has been a leader on and off the field as she has shown unwavering dedication to the team and received academic acknowledgements for her high grade point average. She plans to continue studying rehabilitation services in graduate school by attending physical therapy school in the fall.

1. Walk me through your pre-performance routine: whether it’s a meal, what you’re focused on, or any superstitions you may have?

I don’t really have a routine. I just jump. To get pumped up, I listen to Avenge Sevenfold.

2. If you could compete in any other event, what would it be? Why?

Well I used to be a hepta-athlete so I’ve competed in all the events; my favorite is the long jump for sure.

3. If you were a tree (or animal) what kind of tree (animal) would you be?

A Tarsier

4. If you could be a superhero, what would you want your superpowers to be?

I would have lightning fast speed

5. What would I find in your refrigerator right now?

Lots of fruits and veggies, orange juice, juice boxes, hummus…

6. What did you want to be when you were a child?

A veterinarian. I love animals.

7. If Hollywood made a movie about your life, whom would you like to see play the lead role as you?

Angelina Jolie in her tomb raider days.

8. If you had only six months left to live, what would you do with the time?

I’d spend it doing every extreme sport like rock climbing, white water rafting, sky diving and other stuff I wouldn’t normally do.

9. Explain the worst haircut you have ever had?

In third grade I told the lady I wanted a short bob and I ended up getting a boy bowl cut.
