Tallahassee, FL – The Florida State baseball team played the first of two intra-squad scrimmages Thursday that will bring the fall season to a close. Tonight’s Garnet & Gold game at 6:00 p.m. will be the final full squad practice for the fall and the last time to see the team in action before they open the 2005 schedule at home versus Charleston Southern.
Thursday’s scrimmage featured the squad split into Garnet & Gold teams and was the only scrimmage of the two where the veteran pitchers took the hill. The talk of the scrimmage was a freshman though. Second baseman Tony Thomas, Jr., a freshman from Valrico, FL, led the Gold to a 8-2 victory as he doubled, tripled and homered while driving in two runs and playing stellar defense.
Five Seminoles playing on the gold squad recorded RBIs as the Gold team pounded out nine hits in the win. Freshman Jack Rye recorded two singles and two RBIs for the Gold along with Shane Robinson, Bryan Henry and Danny Diaz who each recorded an RBI as well. Ryne Jernigan aided the Gold cause with a double and Dennis Guinn blasted a triple as six of the Gold’s nine hits went for extra bases.
Matt Sauls, Matt DiBlasi, Glen Simon and Brian Chambers were dominant on the mound for the Gold squad. Each pitched two innings and together, the group combined to limit the Garnet team to just two runs and five hits on the day.
The Garnet’s two runs came courtesy of Danny Wardell’s solo home run and Mark Gildea’s RBI on a bases loaded walk. Josh Spivey who had a double and a single and Nick Francis who singled as well turned in the other big hits for the Garnet. Aaron Cheesman drew a walk to lead off the final inning that turned into a run for the Garnet team.
The biggest defensive play of the day was turned in by 2004 freshman All-American Malone who ended the game by snaring a line drive and turning an unassisted double play. The Gold team scored in five of the eight innings and in three of those scoring innings they posted two runs.
