Tallahassee, FL –
With just three days remaining until the fifth-ranked FSU soccer team takes the field for real, the final two preseason polls were released this week. Florida State was tabbed sixth by Soccer Times and seventh by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA). The Seminoles were ranked fifth by Soccer America and Soccer Buzz earlier this month making the team a unanimous preseason top 10 team for the first time in program history.
Neither ranking is a new record for the Tribe as the team finished 2003 ranked fourth in the final NSCAA poll and fifth in the Soccer Times poll. It is the first time ever FSU has begun a season in the top seven of every poll and the first time FSU has been a consensus top seven team in back-to-back polls dating back to the final polls of 2003.
Florida State’s season opening opponent appears in both of the most recent polls as well. Arizona State is No. 16 in the NSCAA poll and tied for 15th in the Soccer Times poll. The Sun Devils will come to Tallahassee as a consensus top 20 squad when they take the field Friday night.
The Seminoles are coming off an impressive preseason win over a Tennessee team ranked in the top12 in the two latest polls. In just two exhibition games, eight different Seminoles have recorded at least one point and half of those players have two or more points.
Friday’s season opener begins at 7:00 p.m. and follows the first game of the Seminole Nike Classic between Rhode Island and USC. That match will begin at 4:00 p.m. There is no charge for any regular season game at the Seminole Soccer Complex. Live stats will be available exclusively through seminoles.com.
