TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (seminoles.com) – Senior right fielder Shayla Jackson and junior second baseman Tiffani Brown were both named to the National Fastpitch Coaches Association All-Southeast Region Second Team, announced today by the softball organization.
Both Seminoles join a group of 25 first and second-team all-region players residing in the talent-rich states of Florida, Georgia, Tennessee, North Carolina and South Carolina. The all-region honors are a first for both Jackson (Pembroke Pines, Fla.) and Brown (Tallahassee, Fla.).
Since earning all-region honors as a program since 1982, FSU has placed at least one student-athlete on the list in 27 of the past 31 years. Since arriving in Tallahassee prior to the 2009 season, head coach Lonni Alameda has now coached five all-region performers.
Brown has enjoyed a superb junior season that includes a .305 batting average while leading the team in at-bats (210), runs scored (43), base hits (64) and stolen bases (42). Brown is sixth nationally in stolen bases per game with a 0.70 average, and also leads the Atlantic Coast Conference in base hits and stolen bases. Brown was recently named to the All-ACC First Team, and her stolen base total is the most by an FSU student-athlete since 2002, tying for eighth on the single-season list.
Jackson holds a career batting average of .323 and is wrapping up her four-year career with another stellar campaign. In 2012, Jackson is batting .295 with five triples and five doubles, at one point holding a 14-game hitting streak that is the highest of any Seminole this year. She is 13th nationally in triples and 25th in triples per game while sitting second on the team with 13 multiple-hit games.
A total of 18 softball student-athletes represented seven ACC schools on the NFCA All-Region Teams, with FSU and North Carolina being the only conference representatives who are part of the Southeast region.
A total of 263 players representing 129 different institutions comprise this season’s regional teams, including first and second teams for each region. The all-region teams were chosen by NFCA member coaches from each region, and all the honorees will now be eligible for selection to one of three 2012 NFCA Division I All-American teams.
The 2012 NFCA Division I All-America teams will be announced at 5 p.m. EDT on Wednesday, May 30, on NFCA.org.
