TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The UCF Golden Knights improved to 42-17 with a 4-1
victory over Evansville in the first game of the NCAA Baseball Tallahassee
Regional. The Purple Aces fell to 40-21 with the loss.
There were no hits for either team through the first two and a half
innings. UCF’s Greg Good reached on an error by Evansville third baseman
Ryan Connors to lead off the bottom of the third. With two out, Ivan
Trujillo singled to right center, advancing Good to third base. Dustin
Brisson drove in Good with a double to right center, setting a UCF single
season record for doubles with 27.
The Golden Knights broke open the game in the fourth inning, scoring three
runs off of three hits. After retiring the first two batters, Evansville
pitcher Vince Serafini walked the next two batters, Mike Fox and Good. The
number nine batter, Jason Graham, hit a high chopper to third for an infield
hit to load the bases. Leadoff hitter Mike Myers hit the ball down the
middle scoring both Fox and Good, while Graham advanced to third. As the
Purple Aces tried to pickoff Myers at first, Graham stole home, giving UCF a
Evansville didn’t record a hit until the sixth inning when Anthony Molina
hit a shot to right field with one out. The Purple Aces got a run on the
board in the seventh. With two out, UE’s Matt Serafini singled to center
field and was driven in by Joe Noel, who hit a double down the left field
UCF threatened in the seventh as Brisson led off with a base hit to center.
Designated hitter Rich Wallace hit a two-base shot to left field, but the
Evansville defense came up big, throwing out Brisson at the plate. The
Purple Aces saved yet another run in the eighth, throwing out Graham at the
plate as he attempted to score from second on a base hit by Myers.
UCF pitcher Casey Kennedy improved to 12-1 with the win. He gave up one
earned run while striking out eight and walking no one in the complete-game
victory. Evansville’s Serafini fell to 8-3 with the loss.
UCF will play the winner of the Florida State/Bethune-Cookman game at 3
p.m., on Saturday while Evansville will play at 11 a.m., against the loser
of that game.
