USA Diving World Championship Trials Begin Wednesday

May 14, 2013

TALLAHASSEE, Fla.- The nation’s best divers have arrived in Tallahassee to compete in the USA Diving World Championship Trials, held at the Morcom Aquatics Center from Wednesday May, 15 to Monday, May 20.

This event is used as a qualifier for the 2013 FINA World Championships in Barcelona, Spain (July 19-Aug. 4) as well as the 2013 World University Games in Kazan, Russia (July 6-17).

This will be the first time the full trials will be hosted at Florida State. In 2011, the venue was used to host the World Championship Trials for 1-meter and synchronized events, however not the full meet.

Over the course of the six-day meet, American men and women divers will compete in the 1-meter and 3-meter springboard events as well the platform.  There will also be 3-meter and 10-meter platform synchronized events.  The top two finishers after finals will make the World Championship team and represent the United State from July 19 to Aug. 4 in Barcelona.

Included in the field are FSU rising senior Kelsey Goodman, who will compete on 1-meter and 3-meter springboard, while rising redshirt junior Katrina Young will dive the 10-meter platform.   Goodman will begin her meet on Wednesday in the semifinals of the 1-meter springboard.  Young will compete in the quarterfinals of platform, which start on Thursday.

“It’s an amazing opportunity,” head diving coach Patrick Jeffrey said. “It’s great to compete in a meet of this magnitude in your home pool.  It gives them a huge advantage.  They’re not just happy to be here, they have a shot to make the team and having that edge is great.”

Both ladies have experience in USA diving meets as Goodman appeared in the finals of both 1-meter and 3-meter at the 2012 U.S. Summer Nationals.  Young placed 12th in platform at the 2012 Olympic Trials.

Incoming freshman Dominic Giordano will be representing Pitt Aquatic Club Divers and compete in the men’s platform. Hailing from Wexford, Pa., the PIAA state record holder has qualified to compete on platform where he will look to improve on his 10th place finish from the 2012 U.S. Summer Nationals.  He will dive the quarterfinals of the 10-meter, which is slated for Friday.

“Having the support of the locals, friends and family as well as the FSU staff is going to be nice,” Jeffrey said. “Kelsey has been doing a great job this year, coming off an NCAA appearance so, she’s in striking distance. Katrina has been as high as third in the nation and you’ve got to be top two. She’s coming off the Grand Prix meet in Fort Lauderdale from last weekend and she was the second American there. She has a shot if she can focus on the right things and she’s determined. She likes the high-pressure situations.”

Wednesday’s events will kick-off at 10 a.m. with the men’s 1-meter semifinal followed by the women’s 1-meter semifinal. Both men’s and women’s finals of  the 1-meter springboard will conclude the session.

Tickets are sold daily at $5.00 for adults and $3.00 for children or weekly passes can be purchased for $20.00.
