TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Virginia came from three runs down in the bottom of the 6th inning to beat defending Atlantic Coast Conference Champions Georgia Tech, 4-3 to advance to the Championship game.
Virginia (37-25), making their first appearance to the Championship game since 1999, will face Florida State (45-9) at 12 p.m. tomorrow. The Seminoles advanced to the title game by defeating Georgia Tech 5-3 earlier in the day.
Virginia scored first when freshman All-ACC team member Sara Larquier doubled to center field to score Heather Field.
Georgia Tech notched two doubles to tie the score at 1-1 in the second inning. Katie Donovan doubled to center field and then scored on Soraya Reddick’s double.
The Yellow Jackets took the lead in the top of the 5th inning as Tara Knudsen singled to left field scoring Tara Neff. Georgia Tech added another run in the top of the 6th as Donovan doubled to center and was sent home by Reddick’s single down the left field line.
Virginia came back in the bottom of the 6th inning scoring three runs to take the 4-3 lead. Larquier led off the inning with a single and later scored on a throwing error by Tech’s pitcher. Katie Weinberg, who pinch ran for Jenn Wynn, scored to tie the game on a passed ball. Johanna Kaiser scored the go ahead run after she got out of a rundown.
Georgia Tech tied an ACC record for number of doubles in a game by one team (4).
