The Florida State volleyball team gathered Saturday night with family and friends to celebrate the 2007 season and to conclude its spring season with its annual team banquet. The banquet, which was held at the Varsity Club, included a buffet dinner, a video tribute and an awards presentation.
“We wanted to thank everyone for their tremendous support this year,” head coach Todd Kress said. “We’ve finished off a great spring and we really look forward to the next couple years here based on our youth and how much our freshmen are contributing and getting better mixed with our upperclassmen. We’ve got some great talent coming in as well so the future is very bright. We thank all of you for your dedication and sacrifice.”
On behalf of the administration, Director of Student Services John Lata addressed the group and expressed how proud FSU is of the volleyball program both on and off the court and noted their efforts in the way of community service.
Kress and his staff presented the awards and senior Summer Weissing spoke to the group with her senior address. Summer thanked her coaches, support staff and told her teammates to cherish the time because it goes so fast.
The award winners:
Coaches’ Award: Freshman Stephanie Neville
“When I looked out on the court today in our spring tournament and I saw five freshman on the court at one time, I felt that this program was in pretty good hands,” Kress said. “Summer (Weissing) and Makini (Thompson) obviously did a great job of getting this program to where it is and passing the torch on to those younger players. So when we considered the coaches award, we really looked at our younger kids who made such a great contribution this year and some of the changes they made and the work that they put in, the extra work that they put in during preseason getting themselves up to speed because we relied so much on our youth this year, especially down the stretch. When we looked at everyone as a whole and we noticed the changes that people had made, the sacrifice and the dedication, it came down to somebody we felt was very special. She did a great job this year as a freshman and that person is Stephanie Neville.”
Academic Award: Sophomore Brianna Barry
“This award goes to the person with the highest GPA and it doesn’t go with any surprises,” Kress said. “It is also the person that I think puts in a tremendous amount of time into her studies … Brianna Barry with a 3.87.”
Most Valuable Player: Senior Summer Weissing
“The final award is Most Valuable Player,” Kress said. “In my 15 years as we’ve given out the Most Valuable Player throughout the years, we’ve had some pretty special people and obviously here at Florida State we’ve honored some pretty special people with that award. It always goes to someone who contributes at the most difficult time, somebody that shows leadership when we’re down, somebody who obviously puts up great numbers for us. But over those 15 years, we’ve never given it someone that either hasn’t attacked the ball for us or hasn’t set the ball for us but this year, it was a no-brainer that it had to go to one of the best players that I’ve ever coached. I am so proud to have had the opportunity to coach her for four years and that’s Summer Weissing.”
