TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Seminoles had the home-court advantage in this year’s installment of the Fresh From Florida Sunshine Showdown, but the standing-room-only crowd wasn’t enough to hold off the Gators on Wednesday night (9/12). The two teams battled through four sets, but No. 11 Florida came out victorious in the midweek matchup.
Florida State moves to a 4-5 overall record this season with only one match remaining in before ACC play begins. Wednesday night’s match marks FSU’s third loss to an AVCA Top-25 program in the 2018 non-conference season.
The Gators got out to a quick start in the first set, staying ahead of the Seminoles from the beginning and holding it until the end. Pressure from UF’s offense helped the Gators outhit FSU in the set. Florida carried the momentum from the first set into the second, gaining and early lead and holding it until the end for a 2-0 lead in the match heading into intermission.
The Seminoles came out of intermission to start off the third set on a 7-0 run, and never let the Gators close the gap by more than four points throughout the set. Limited errors and a number of blocks from FSU gave UF the opportunity to make its own errors, keeping FSU in the lead until they were able to close out the set and send the match to a fourth.
The fourth set was close in the beginning, but the Gators outhit the Seminoles in the set once again. Four total blocks from Florida kept FSU’s attack percentage down, but strong defense in FSU’s backcourt slowed UF’s tempo. While FSU held off the match point, Florida was able to close it out and win the final set to take the match 2-1.
The Seminoles head to Alabama this weekend to face another SEC team, Auburn, on Sunday at 1 pm ET. The match against the Tigers will mark the end of the non-conference season for FSU, as the team hosts Duke and Wake Forest the following weekend to open ACC play.
