TALLAHASSEE, FL – Seniors Holly Schneider and LaToya Washington
combined for 36 kills and 33 digs to help lead the Lady Seminole volleyball
team to a 15-0, 12-15, 8-15, 15-6, 15-13 victory over North Carolina in a
marathon match at Tully Gymnasium. The five-game win propelled FSU into a
tie for first in the ACC with the Tar Heels at 11-3. Florida State is now
21-8 overall. North Carolina dropped to 24-6 on the season.
The Lady Seminoles dominated the Tar Heels in game one. Outside
hitter Jennifer Werrick tallied five kills, a block, and an ace to lead
Florida State to a 15-0 shutout. North Carolina quickly regained life in
the second game as the Tar Heels used four service aces along with seven
kills from Alicia Alford for a 15-12 game two win.
North Carolina capitalized on numerous errors by FSU, outhitting
the Lady Seminoles .375 to .174 in the third game. Casey Simpson posted 6
kills to help push the Tar Heels out to a 2-1 match lead with a 15-8 game
Florida State regained its game one form in the fourth game,
marching out to an 8-0 edge and holding off North Carolina to win 15-6 and
send the match to a pivotal fifth game.
The Tribe and the Heels battled through ten tie scores in game
five. After UNC gained its largest lead at 11-9, a Schneider kill and a
Werrick kill knotted the game again at 11-11. FSU took the lead with a
Schneider ace, but the Heels matched with a Simpson kill. The teams traded
points again for a 13-13 tie. Susan Hawks blasted a Bolten set down the
middle for a 14-13 FSU advantage then teamed with Washington for a big
block on the right side to send the Lady Seminoles to victory 15-13.
“It was truly a total team effort today,” said FSU head coach Dr.
Cecile Reynaud after the match. “This win certainly helps our confidence.”
Schneider led the Lady Seminoles with 22 kills and 19 digs.
Werrick added 21 kills and 14 digs and Washington posted 14 kills and 14
digs. Bolten totaled a double-double with 66 assists and 10 digs. Simpson
tallied 21 kills to lead the Tar Heels. Alford and Erin Berg added
Florida State hits the road this week to round out its regular
season schedule. The Lady Seminoles travel to Jacksonville for a 7:00
match Tuesday then to ACC-foes Maryland and Virginia next weekend.
