Volleyball Falls To Florida In Straight Sets

Sept. 28, 1999

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Despite strong performances from Aisha
Thornton, who had a team-high 13 kills, and Norisha Campbell’s 12 kills,
the Florida State Lady Seminole volleyball team fell to No. 4 Florida by
scores of 5-15, 4-15, 9-15 in front of 1,723 fans at Tully Gymnasium.
FSU goes to 5-8 while Florida improves to 11-2 on the season.

The Lady Gators took big leads in all three games, but Florida
State remained competitive. Thornton led FSU with a .435 hitting
performance while Campbell hit .409 for the match. Florida hit .415 as
a team, but the Lady Seminoles had a good night at the net, recording 18
blocks. Thornton again led the way with six.

“I was pleased because we fought hard,” FSU head coach Dr.
Cecile Reynaud said. “They have a lot more experience than we have, but
we stayed with it and fought most of the time. We wanted to make sure
we came out and played hard. We started out slow, but ended strong in
each game. It was a tremendous effort for our young team.”

Twelve players saw action for the Lady Seminoles, who will host
Maryland on Friday at 7 p.m. The Lady Gators were led by Heather
Wright, who hit .621 with a match-high 19 kills. Jenny Manz added 17
kills and hit .500 for the match while Jerilyn Hattendorf also recorded
double-digit kills with 10.
