TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Florida State University women’s volleyball team matches its highest ranking of the season after being selected in the No. 13 spot of the American Volleyball Coaches Association Poll, announced today.
The ranking ties for the third-highest weekly spot in program history, trailing only last season’s No. 11 finish in the final poll as well as the No. 12 ranking during the week of Nov. 30, 2009. The Seminoles (9-1, 1-0) were also ranked 13th in the poll during the second week of the season after defeating New Mexico State, FIU and USF at the Florida State Invitational.
Last weekend, FSU defeated Atlantic Coast Conference rival Miami, 3-1 (19-25, 27-25, 27-25, 25-18), in front of a near-capacity crowd at the James Knight Complex in Coral Gables, Fla. The Seminoles earned a Top 25 road victory nearly two weeks ago when they defeated then-16th ranked Kentucky, 3-2 (21-25, 25-22, 25-20, 17-25, 15-6), in Lexington.
FSU now braces for arguably its toughest matchup of the regular season as the third-ranked Florida Gators come to Tallahassee on Wednesday, Sept. 22, at 7 p.m. at Tully Gym. The match marks the first time that both schools will compete as Top 15 members of the AVCA poll.
The Seminoles look to snap an 18-match skid against Florida that spans back to the 1995 season. In last year’s contest, the Seminoles took the Gators to five sets in Gainesville before falling, 17-15, in the final set.
Fans are encouraged to attend Wednesday night’s contest, which is Residential Hall Challenge Night. The first 250 students get a free 2010 Volleyball koozie, and the hall with the most attendants will win $200 in free Pizza Hut coupons for a dorm event.
