TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (Seminoles.com) – The Florida State University indoor volleyball team played in its first two matches of the spring season over the weekend, defeating Jacksonville University (25-18, 25-17, 25-18, 25-19) as well as the University of North Florida (25-18, 25-18, 25-22, 25-22) in Jacksonville, Fla.
With their first opportunity to showcase what they’ve learned in spring training, FSU put together sound performances against both opponents. In both matches combined, junior outside hitter Fatma Yildirim stepped up with 24 kills as she figures to be an important piece to the 2012 squad’s hitting attack.
Also enjoying a good offensive day was sophomore right-side hitter Elise Walch, who also tallied 24 kills in both matches combined. Her sister, freshman outside hitter Nicole Walch, produced 20 kills on the afternoon.
Junior middle blocker Sareea Freeman seemed to pick up where she left off in the 2011 National Semifinal season, putting down 19 kills. Junior middle blocker Marija Milosavljevic added 14 kills, while Amanda Saxton picked up 12 put-downs.
In what should be a tremendous group this season, the middle blockers continued their good defensive play as Freeman finished with 11 blocks, while Saxton added nine. AVCA All-American Ashley Neff sat out both matches as she continues to rehabilitate from injury.
Redshirt freshman libero Katie Mosher led the Seminoles with 30 digs, while Nicole Walch added 24 digs and Yildirim produced 14. Setters Duygu Duzceler and Sarah Wickstrom also performed well, garnering 50 and 43 assists, respectively.
