TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The No. 15 Florida State volleyball team fell to Colorado State on Saturday afternoon (Sept. 2), falling behind in defense to hand the Rams a 3-0 win. The Seminoles are now 1-1 through the first two days of the Home2 Suites by Hilton Tallahassee Seminole Invitational.
In the first set, the Seminoles put up a fight on offense with junior outside hitter Christina Ambrose leading the pack. Ambrose led the team with 6 kills on 11 attacks, but with a team hitting percentage of .175, more attack errors and fewer digs, the Seminoles eventually dropped the first set 25-21.
FSU came out in the second set with some momentum, going on a 5-0 run to start the set. From there, the two teams traded kills and errors, but the Seminoles held the lead through the first half of the set. The two teams remained tied from 15-15 to 22-22 before the Rams fired back on offense and took the second set 25-23.
In the third set, Colorado State came out ready to earn the sweep, hitting .654 with two team blocks and nine digs. The Rams took an early lead in the set and ran with it, toppling the Seminoles 25-15 to hand Florida State its first loss of the season.
Quoting head coach Chris Poole
“We were afraid we would have games like this this year, it was just unfortunate because it seemed like we just couldn’t pull it together today. Our defense was very poor today in both blocking and defensively. Offensively we seemed out of rhythm for most of the match. We’ll just have to use today as motivation so we can come out and perform better tomorrow against TCU. This will just be a learning experience and we’re looking to get better every day.”
Our biggest problem today was our defense, but offensively we really only had two that showed up. Defensively we just really didn’t slow CSU down, and that can really make a difference because we had such a hard time getting the ball back up to continue to run our offense. I thought Mili and Natasha both had great matches offensively, the rest of them were kind of up and down a little bit. We didn’t get any middle attack today, and that can make a big difference if you’re not able to connect with your middles.
