TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Florida State men’s tennis team lost a hard fought battle to the 19th ranked Demon Deacons of Wake Forest Saturday afternoon. The match, however, was a lot closer than the 6-1 decision would imply. The Seminoles’ record falls to 12-6 overall and 4-1 in the conference. With the win, the Demon Deacons advance to 14-2 overall and 5-0 in ACC play.
Wake Forest jumped out to an early 1-0 lead after sweeping the doubles matches. But the Seminoles fought back in singles play, forcing a third set in four out of the six matches. After the Seminoles went down 3-0, Gustav Bucht earned the sole Seminole point of the afternoon with a win over Wake’s Trent Brendon at the no. 5 position (3-6, 6-3, 6-3). However, soon after, sophomore Romain Jurd was unable to overcome a third set rally by David Bere at no. 2 singles (6-2, 3-6, 6-2), which clinched the victory for the Demon Deacons. Freshman Chip Webb, at no. 4, and senior Jeff Scarella, at no. 6, also forced their matches into a third set before retiring to the Demon Deacons.
The Seminoles’ match against Florida Atlantic scheduled for tomorrow, Sunday, March 31st has been cancelled so the Seminoles will return to action next Saturday, April 6th at 4 p.m. against the University of North Carolina.
