TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Rising junior Nicole Walch has been selected by USA Volleyball to represent her country as a member of the U.S. Collegiate National Team that will compete on the China tour this summer, running from June 17-27. The finalized roster was announced on Thursday.
“I’m really excited and honored to have this opportunity,” Walch said. “Being able to play with the top players at the collegiate level and traveling to China is a one-of-a-kind experience.”
According to USA Volleyball, the tour is being organized by Bring It Promotions and will travel in partnership with the Pac 12 team that will be making a return trip this summer following a successful trip in 2013. The U.S. Collegiate National Team, which will train at University of Southern California June 13-15 before leaving for China, will play six matches against Chinese collegiate and adult teams.
For Walch, this is her third time joining a USA Volleyball A2 team as she previously helped the United States Junior A2 team win the European Global Challenge in 2012 before taking her game up a notch to the Senior A2 program in the summer of 2013.
“Being selected for this team that will travel and play in China is a huge accomplishment for Nicole,” head coach Chris Poole said. “We continue to recruit some of the best players in the world and very excited that Nicole will have this experience.”
The Stuart, Fla. native earned her spot on the squad following a three-day tryout (Feb. 21-23) at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo., which contained 246 players and 61 were outside hitters.
“The tryout was such a great experience,” Walch said. “We got trained by the USA Volleyball head coaches for a weekend and they’re the Olympic coaches so it was an awesome experience. It was also great to play with all the other girls from different schools and it was fun.”
USA Volleyball will have two other opportunities for athletes to take part in the U.S. Collegiate National Team program representing 60 total athletes this summer. USA Volleyball will announce later this month its 12-player U.S. Collegiate National Team that will play friendly matches in Maribor, Slovenia, and compete in the Global Challenge in Pula, Croatia. The European trip will take place July 9-18.
In addition, USA Volleyball will select 36 players to participate in the U.S. Collegiate National Team program that will train and compete from June 22 to July 1.
