CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – In a nearly perfect showing, the No. 9-ranked Florida State softball team (20-3, 2-1 ACC) won their eighth-straight ACC series with a 15-0 no-hitter win over Virginia (3-16, 1-5 ACC) on Sunday morning at The Park in Charlottesville, Va.
Florida State brought 16 batters to the plate in an 11-run third inning that propelled the Seminoles to their largest margin of victory since a 20-0 win over Bethune-Cookman on Feb. 10, 2013. It also marked the second no-hitter FSU has thrown this season and the 13th no-hitter under head coach Lonni Alameda.
“This was a total team win today. It is exciting to watch our team play Florida State Softball when the offense, defense and pitching are all executing. Lacey was amazing in the circle again and really proud of our entire offense for seeing good pitches and having quality at bats.
Lacey Waldrop moved to 11-2 on the season with the third individual, and fourth overall, no-hitter of her career. She surrendered only two walks in 5.0 innings with five strikeouts in the victory.
The hits came early and often as 11 different Seminoles recorded a hit and nine different players scored at least one run. Maddie O’Brien led the team with three hits and Courtney Senas, Victoria East, Briana Hamilton, Stephanie Hartness and Bailey Schinella had two hits apiece. O’Brien went 3-for-4 with two doubles, two RBI and three runs scored.
Schinella was a perfect 2-for-2 on the afternoon with two walks, three runs scored and four RBI. She set or tied career highs in each category. The junior now has 14 hits on the season with seven that have gone for extra bases – six doubles and a home run.
The Seminoles were all over Virginia starter Aimee Chapdelaine (3-14) in the third, highlighted by a four-pitch sequence that saw East, Hamilton and Hartness each hit RBI singles culminating in a towering three-run home run to left field by Celeste Gomez to finish Chapdelaine’s outing.
Florida State now travels to Ft. Myers for a doubleheader against Virginia Tech on March 11 hosted by Florida Gulf Coast starting at 5:00 p.m. The Seminoles will then play one game against the FGCU Eagles on March 12 at 7:00 p.m.
