Warrick Leads Seminole Offense in Scrimmage

Aug. 18, 1999

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Florida State football team held their
second scrimmage this morning at Doak Campbell Stadium. Wide receiver
Peter Warrick led the way offensively with nine catches for 168 yards
while cornerback Mario Edwards had the lone interception of the session.

“The offense had the best day its had in years,” said head coach
Bobby Bowden. “They moved up and down the field. They didn’t get into
the endzone enough, but part of the reason for that was the structure of
the scrimmage. All the quarterbacks moved the ball.”

Quarterback Chris Weinke finished 14-of-24 for 137 yards while
Jared Jones was 4-of-10 for 107 yards. Atrews Bell (3-28) and Coles
(3-24) followed Warrick in the receiving column. Freshman Nick Maddox
was the leading rusher and had the only touchdown, from one-yard out, of
the scrimmage. Maddox carried nine times for 37 yards and added a
61-yard scoring run in third down situational play (not included in the
stats).

“The wide receivers caught the ball well,” said Bowden. “Pete
(Warrick) sure did look great. The offensive line must have done a good
job because we moved the ball. I thought the heat would get to them,
but they did well.”

Sebastian Janikowski was one-of-two on field goal attempts in
the scrimmage, connecting from 22 yards and missing from 56 yards out.

Jerel Hudson, Jamal Reynolds, Tony Benford and Alonzo Jackson
had one sack apiece.

Injury report: RB Jeff Chaney (sat out with an intestinal flu),
RB Raymont Skaggs (bruised ribs), OG Jason Whitaker (left shoulder
contusion), TE Patrick Hughes (jaw contusion), DT Rian Cason (held out
after suffering from heat exhaustion at last evening’s practice) and WR
Matt Munyon (bruised ribs).

Bowden announced that wide receiver Laveranues Coles will be
suspended for the season opener against Louisiana Tech. Coles was
slated to start opposite Peter Warrick in that game with Ron Dugans out
with fractured finger.

“Laveranues Coles will be suspended for the first game,” said
Bowden. “It has nothing to do with the Houston trip, but academics
instead.”

The Seminoles will work solely on the kicking game in the
stadium this evening. The final scrimmage will be held Friday
afternoon.
