TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Tasha Waugh’s homerun over the left field fence in the second inning lifted No. 3 seed Georgia Tech to a 3-0 victory over No. 2 seed North Carolina in game two of the 2003 ACC Softball Championship at the Seminole Softball Complex.
Georgia Tech (35-21) advances to play the winner of the Virginia/Florida State game at 1:00 p.m. tomorrow. North Carolina falls to 39-19 and will play Maryland tomorrow morning in an elimination game at 11:00 a.m.
With one out in the second inning, Georgia Tech’s Soraya Reddick reached on an error and later scored on Waugh’s homerun. Wuagh now has 4 homeruns on the year and thirteen RBI. Tech scrathed the scoreboard again in the 4th inning. Kirin Kumar doubled to center field with two outs and later scored when Felicia Coursey reached on an error to make the margin 3-0.
All-ACC team member Jessica Sallinger(21-13) pitched seven solid innings for the Yellow Jackets giving up 2 hits and striking out twelve North Carolina batters. Crystal Cox (24-11), the ACC’s Rookie of the Year, gave up six hits and struck out 5 Georgia Tech batters.
North Carolina threatened in the bottom of the seventh with two outs as Emily Price walked. Dionne Street hit a single and Price came around to score closing the gap 3-1. Sallinger came threw for the Yellow Jackets as she struck out a pinch hitter for the final out of the game.
