GREENVILLE, S.C. – In spite of inclement weather that affected day two of the Furman Fall Classic, the Florida State women’s tennis team left the courts cheering for senior Jessica Sucupira as she earned her additional doubles win to name her FSU’s all-time career doubles wins leader with a total of 74 triumphs. The Seminoles were originally slated to play two rounds of doubles and one of singles, but due to the weather all singles matches will be played Sunday beginning at 9 a.m.
Sucupira teamed up with freshman Amy Sargeant to kick off doubles this morning. The twosome faced Tennessee’s Szekely and Sorbello where they overpowered and won 8-6. Sucupira and Sargeant moved on to the flight championships to battle against Northwestern’s Murray and Abu Mushraf but lost 8-0 to finish the doubles tournament with a 2-1 record.
As the only doubles team to go undefeated, junior Bonny Davidson and Francesca Segarelli finished the doubles portion of the tournament with an impressive 3-0 record that earned them the flight champion’s title. The dynamic duo started the day with a win over Northwestern’s Mosolova and Turvy 8-4, and then quickly turned around to dominate Maruice and Mosteller of Furman 8-1.
Flight two featured senior Lauren McCreless (Macfarlane) and junior Federica Suess teaming up against Preeg and Stanford of Furman where the Seminoles surpassed in an 8-1 victory. McCreless and Suess then matched up with Lee and Lui of Northwestern, but unfortunately fell 8-6 and finished the tournament with a 1-2 record.
After falling in the first round yesterday, junior Katie Rybakova and sophomore Noemie Scharle started the consolation draw strong with a win over Vanderbilt’s Newman and Steinbauer 8-5. The Seminoles then moved on to play Morgina and Sarri-Bystrom of South Carolina, but lost 8-1 to leave the doubles tournament with a 1-2 record.
Florida State will be back in action Sunday, September 27, at 9 a.m. with singles matches only.
