Weather Interrupts `Noles First Day Of UCF Tournament

Jan. 16, 2010

ORLANDO, Fla. – As the No. 15 Florida State women’s tennis team prepared to open the first day of the UCF Tournament in Orlando, Fla., inclement weather hit Florida causing delays for the rest of the day. In spite of the holdup, the Seminoles were able to close out the day with one doubles victory and three singles wins.

“The conditions today were far from ideal for everyone out there,” FSU Head Coach Jennifer Hyde said. “The winds were as bad as we have seen in years, but the girls did a pretty good job using that to their advantage.”

Doubles play opened the tournament and saw FSU finishing with a 1-3 record. Juniors Katie Rybakova (Coral Springs, Fla.) and Federica Suess (Ludwigshafen, Germany) teamed up to post the lone win over Paulina Bigos and Antonia Foehse of Alabama 8-4.

After being pushed back an hour, singles was cut short due to the continuing rain. However, the Seminoles were able to get in four matches including three victories.

Leading the way for the ‘Noles was captain Lauren McCreless (Ogden, Utah), ranked No. 23, defeating Leigh Finnegan of Illinois 6-2, 7-5.

“Lauren was down 2-5 in the 2nd set after winning the 1st set, and true to form, Lauren mounted a comeback and closed out her opponent 7-5 in the 2nd set,” Coach Hyde said.

Next up was Rybakova earning her first victory of the spring season over a ranked opponent in No. 33 Rachael White (Illinois), 7-5, 6-3.

“It was great for Katie to snag a top 35 win today,” Coach Hyde added. “She played far from her best tennis, yet was still able to get the job done.”

Earning the last singles win for the Garnet and Gold was Suess in her 6-1, 6-4 victory over Marisa Lambropoulos of Illinois.

“Fede dominated her singles match from start to finish,” Coach Hyde said. “She’s hitting the ball very cleanly right now and is doing a great job of finishing off points.”

Florida State is scheduled to open play against UCF in doubles at 10 a.m. Sunday morning, but with inclement weather still in the forecast matches may be delayed again. Fans can keep up with Sunday’s matches on RadioTennis.com as they will be broadcasting a global webcast.
