Weekend Recap: Roberta Alison Fall Invite

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Two championships and three third place finishes later, the Florida State women’s tennis team concluded the 2005 Roberta Alison Fall Invitational on the campus of the University of Alabama Saturday.


 


Senior Alina Mihailescu won the Category 4.5 singles draw, defeating Laura Kirk by scores of 6-2, 2-6, 10-6.  She and doubles partner, Kayla Berry of Iowa, also won the Category 3.0 doubles title with an 8-5 victory over Flavia Russo and Maron Lehman.


 


In the Singles Open draw, freshman Suzanna Mansour overpowered Diana Espinal, 6-3, 6-0, after upsetting fourth-seeded Kamila Dudakhadjaeva (AUM) in the first round of action.  In Category C and D play, freshman Ania Rynarzewska fell in the championship match to Mari Muller (UA) (6-2, 6-1) and junior Whitney Eber dropped a three set decision to Natalina Sienkob (6-1, 3-6, 6-3).  Sophomore Tapiwa Marobela finished strong at the Roberta Alison Fall Invitational with a third-place finish in Category D after defeating Brooke Cowie, 6-3, 6-1. 


 


Also in doubles action, the Eber/Rynarzewska tandem fell to Samford’s Anna Jackson and Katie McMiller, 8-5. 


 


Alabama freshman Shelly Godwin claimed her first flight championship at the Roberta Alison Fall Classic.  Godwin won easily in the finals, 6-1, 6-1, over South Alabama’s Jelena Krivacevic. She also won earlier in the day in the semifinals with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Marobela.
