Weinke And Polley Named ACC Players Of The Week

Sept. 11, 2000

Greensboro, NC –
Quarterback Chris Weinke and linebacker Tommy
Polley have been named ACC Football Players of the Week for their
performances in Florida State’s win over Georgia Tech on Saturday.
Weinke took offensive back honors while Polley was the top defensive
back (outside linebackers and secondary) in the conference over the
weekend.

Weinke, a 6-5, 229-pound senior from St. Paul, Minn., completed
25-of-38 passes for a career-high 443 yards and two touchdowns in FSU’s
26-21 victory at Georgia Tech. In leading the Seminoles to a
come-from-behind win for the fourth time in the last six games, Weinke
became FSU’s all-time leading passer with 6,433 yards. He has now won
22 straight games as a starter (tied for sixth in NCAA history) and owns
a career record of 23-1 as a starter (tied for sixth in NCAA history in
terms of winning percentage). In addition, 17 of Weinke’s 25
completions moved the chains for first downs and he was named ABC’s
Player of the Game.

Polley made plays all over the field from his weakside
linebacking position in his first game back as a starter following knee
surgery. The 6-5, 233-pound senior out of Baltimore, Md., led the team
with 12 tackles (eight solo) on the night. Polley had one tackle for
loss and a pair of third downs stops as the FSU defense actually allowed
the Georgia Tech offense to score 14 points (interception return for a
touchdown) .

Clemson guard Kyle Young (offensive lineman), North Carolina
defensive end Julius Peppers (defensive lineman), North Carolina wide
receiver/punt returner Bosley Allen (specialist) and NC State
quarterback Philip Rivers (rookie) were the other ACC Players of the
Week.
